Stephen has worked in coffee for nearly twenty years. His career started in Dublin, working as a barista and trainer for Bewley’s before moving to London to open Square Mile Coffee, and then winning the World Barista Championship in 2008. He then moved to Chicago to work for Intelligentsia Coffee as Director of Education and during 8 years there, moved into a marketing role – overseeing communications, design and store design for the renowned roaster and retailer. During this time he co-founded Coffee Common, a series of consumer-focused educational events that originated at the TED conference and Uppers & Downers, a coffee and beer festival that takes place in Chicago, London and Berlin. He’s judging barista competitions around the world, and chaired the WBC Evolution committee which orchestrated some of the biggest changes to the competition over the past decade. Today, Stephen is the Director of Brand Strategy for the Specialty Coffee Association, and lives in London with his wife and two kids.
